How to Hear God’s Voice in a Noisy Season

Christmas is beautiful, but let’s be honest… it’s also loud.

There are decorations to hang, gifts to buy, meals to plan, events to attend, and emotions layered into every corner of December. And somewhere between the twinkling lights and the to-do lists, our hearts start whispering the same quiet question:

“Lord… how do I hear You in all of this?”

If you’ve ever felt that, you’re not alone.
The Christmas season has a way of stirring both joy and noise. But God hasn’t stopped speaking. He hasn’t gone quiet. His voice is still steady and clear, we just have to learn to tune our hearts to it.

Today, I want to walk with you through something simple and powerful:
How to hear God’s voice in a noisy season.
Not perfectly. Not magically. But biblically, gently, and practically — right where you are.

God’s Voice Brings Peace, Not Pressure

One of the most helpful filters I’ve learned is this:

God’s voice leads us to peace.
The enemy’s voice leads us to pressure.

Jesus says in John 10:27,

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

John 10:27 ESV

He doesn’t make us guess.
He doesn’t shame us for being unsure.
He leads with peace.

So when your thoughts start racing:

  • “I need to do more.”
  • “I should be better.”
  • “I’m failing at Christmas again.”

Those thoughts aren’t coming from your Shepherd.

God’s voice always pulls us toward calm confidence in Him — never frantic striving.

God Speaks Most Clearly Through His Word

If you’re wondering where to start, begin with your Bible.

Psalm 119:105 says,

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Psalm 119:105 ESV

A lamp.
Not a floodlight.
Not a spotlight.

A lamp gives just enough light for the next step.

During Christmas, when life feels overwhelming, Scripture becomes that soft, steady light guiding you forward.

You don’t need an hour-long study.
Even a single verse, read slowly, can quiet your heart long enough to hear Him.

Try reading Scripture like this:

  • Slowly
  • Out loud
  • With one question in mind:
“Lord, what do You want me to notice here?”

His voice becomes clearer when we slow down enough to listen.

God Often Speaks Through Gentle Nudges

Elijah didn’t hear God in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire (1 Kings 19:11–12).
He heard Him in the gentle whisper.

Most of God’s guidance in my life has come through small, quiet nudges:

  • “Reach out to her.”
  • “Let that go.”
  • “Slow down.”
  • “Say yes.”
  • “This isn’t for you.”

If you’re expecting fireworks, you might miss the whisper.

God’s guidance feels like:

  • clarity
  • peace
  • conviction
  • agreement with Scripture
  • a steady sense that something is “right” or “not quite right”

Not pushy.
Not frantic.
Just… steady.

That’s your Wonderful Counselor at work.

God’s Voice Is Confirmed by God’s Word

This is where many women feel unsure — “How do I know this thought is from God?”

Here’s a simple rule:

God will never lead you in a direction that contradicts His Word.

So if a thought:

  • goes against Scripture
  • increases confusion or fear
  • pressures you into rushing
  • causes shame rather than conviction
  • stirs anxiety rather than trust

…it’s not Him.

God’s voice aligns with God’s Word every single time.

God Often Uses Stillness to Speak to Our Hearts

Psalm 46:10 says,

Be still, and know that I am God.

Psalm 46:10 ESV

Notice the order:

  1. Be still
  2. Then know

Stillness comes before clarity.

But I get it — slowing down feels impossible this time of year.
Stillness doesn’t have to be an hour-long retreat. Stillness can be:

  • five quiet minutes in the morning
  • a peaceful drive with worship music
  • praying over your sink full of dishes
  • closing your eyes and breathing deeply on your lunch break

It’s less about the environment and more about the posture of your heart.

Stillness makes space for God to speak.

God Uses Godly People to Confirm His Leading

Proverbs 11:14 says,

Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.

Proverbs 11:14 ESV

Sometimes God uses a friend’s wisdom to guide you.
A text that arrives at just the right moment.
A piece of advice that brings clarity.
A conversation that confirms what God has already been whispering.

If something someone says gives you peace and points you toward God, don’t ignore it — He may be speaking through them.

God’s Guidance Is Often Step-by-Step

Sometimes the hardest part about hearing God is accepting that He rarely gives us the whole picture.
He usually gives us:

  • one step
  • one choice
  • one direction
  • one moment of clarity

Psalm 37:23 says,

The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord.

Psalm 37:23 KJV

Steps — not leaps.

If you’re in a season of uncertainty, take the next right step you do know, and trust God to reveal the rest.

He’s faithful like that.

Living It Out: Hearing the Wonderful Counselor This Christmas

As Christmas draws closer, let your heart settle into this beautiful truth:

God is speaking.
You are His child.
And you can hear His voice.

Not because you’re perfect at listening,
but because He’s perfect at leading.

Let His peace quiet the noise.
Let His Word steady your steps.
Let His whisper guide you through the season.

Your Wonderful Counselor is with you — in the quiet moments, the overwhelmed moments, and every moment in between.

Prayer for a Listening Heart

Lord, thank You for being my Wonderful Counselor. In all the noise of this season, help me recognize Your voice above everything else. Teach me to rest, to slow down, and to let Your Word guide my thoughts and steps. Give me a heart that listens, eyes that see Your goodness, and a spirit that follows wherever You lead. Amen.
