The Call to Grow

Faith is not a one-time event but a journey of continual growth and deepening trust in God. Yet many of us find ourselves unsure of how to move forward in our spiritual lives. Prayer, Bible study, and worship might feel like obligations rather than life-giving practices, leaving  us wondering how to truly grow in our relationship with God.

The good news is that God desires for us to grow and equips us with tools and practices to help us deepen our faith. This week, we’ll explore practical habits that foster spiritual growth and how they draw us closer to God.

Join me for week 3's video as we discuss this weeks study and take a deeper look at Growing in Faith >> Coming Soon.

Stagnation in Faith

Stagnation often occurs when spiritual practices become routine or when life’s busyness crowds out time with God. It’s easy to feel like growth is something that happens naturally, without effort, but spiritual growth requires intentionality. Neglecting practices like prayer and Scripture can leave us feeling disconnected from God, even if we still attend church or identify as Christians.

Another challenge is the misconception that faith is static. Some may feel they’ve reached a plateau in their relationship with God or believe they’re not “spiritual enough” to grow further. But faith is dynamic, and God invites us to continually draw closer to Him, regardless of where we are in our journey.

Walking in Growth

Colossians 1:10 provides a vision for spiritual growth:

"So that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God." Colossians 1:10 NIV

This verse emphasizes that spiritual growth leads to a life that honors God. As we grow, we bear fruit in our actions, reflect Christ’s character, and deepen our understanding of His Word.

2 Peter 3:18 reminds us that growth is an ongoing process:

"But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen." 2 Peter 3:18 NIV

Growth in grace and knowledge involves learning more about God’s character, experiencing His love, and living out His truth. It’s a continual journey of discovery and transformation.

Habits That Foster Growth

Spiritual growth doesn’t happen by accident—it’s the result of cultivating habits that draw us closer to God. These habits create space for the Holy Spirit to work in our lives, shaping us into the image of Christ.

Prayer is the foundation of spiritual growth. It’s our direct line of communication with God, allowing us to express our hearts, seek His guidance, and align our desires with His will. Regular, intentional prayer strengthens our relationship with Him and provides clarity and peace.

Bible study equips us with truth and wisdom. God’s Word is living and active, speaking into our lives and guiding us in righteousness. As we study Scripture, we learn more about His character, promises, and plans for us, building a firm foundation for our faith.

Worship shifts our focus from ourselves to God. Whether through music, gratitude, or acts of service, worship reminds us of His greatness and deepens our love for Him. It’s a powerful way to reconnect with His presence and experience His joy.

Practical Steps to Grow in Faith

Commit to Daily Prayer: Set aside time each day to pray, even if it’s just a few minutes. Be honest with God about your struggles, thank Him for His blessings, and ask for His guidance in specific areas of your life.

Engage with Scripture: Choose a Bible reading plan or study a specific book of the Bible. Take notes, ask questions, and reflect on how the passages apply to your life. Consider memorizing key verses to carry with you throughout the day.

Make Worship a Lifestyle: Worship doesn’t have to be limited to Sunday services. Create a playlist of worship songs, keep a gratitude journal, or find ways to serve others as an act of worship. Look for opportunities to honor God in your daily routine.

Join a Community: Growth often happens in the context of relationships. Join a Bible study, prayer group, or mentorship program where you can learn alongside others and receive encouragement.

Evaluate and Adjust: Periodically assess your spiritual practices. Are they helping you grow, or do they feel stagnant? Be open to trying new approaches, like a different devotional, prayer style, or service opportunity.

God Desires Your Growth

Spiritual growth is not about perfection but about progress. God is patient and gracious, meeting us where we are and guiding us toward deeper relationship with Him. Philippians 1:6 reminds us:

"Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." Philippians 1:6 NIV

God is committed to your growth. As you cultivate habits of prayer, Scripture, and worship, trust that He is working in you, even when you don’t see immediate results. Every step you take toward Him is a step toward the abundant life He desires for you.

Dear Lord, thank You for calling me to grow in my faith and for equipping me with tools to draw closer to You. Help me to develop habits of prayer, Scripture, and worship that deepen my relationship with You. Teach me to rely on Your strength and to trust Your timing as I grow. Thank You for Your patience and grace. May my life reflect Your love and bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
